Opposed to this natural evil is the learned set of morals, good behaviour and rules, the â€Å"Super-ego†, that are imposed on every individual by its surroundings and that build up society. Golding suggests that these rules cannot eradicate our inborn evil part, but are capable to mitigate the full expression of out savagery. Throughout the novel Golding associates the instinct of civilisation with good and the instinct of savagery with evil. The story starts off with two of the stranded, English boys, Ralph and Piggy, finding a conch shell and using it to assemble the other stranded children. At this assembly the boys democratically elect a leader, namely Ralph. This election and the chosen leader are the representation of civilisation, because democracy is a social system based on equality and the interest of the group. The democratically chosen leader Ralph and his conch shell, which enables democracy and thereby a form of order to develop within the group, are the symbols of rule and civilised society. During the first hunt they boys accidently come across a young piglet that is caught up in the creepers of the forest. The boys catch the innocent you creature and Jack wants to kill it, but his morals and embarrassment hold him from actually doing the deed. In the scene where the boys first manage to actually catch and kill a pig, they already show some attributes of savagery, for example their painted faces , or the fact, that they want to kill the pig and enjoy killing it or that they give in to the total frenzy and ecstasy after the kill. Assured by his success in hunting Jack starts more and more to question Ralph’s power and authority and as the conflict between the two deepens, the conch shell loses some of its symbolic importance. In the book this is emphasised by Golding, by describing the shell as more and more pale and fragile, which of course is symbolic for civilisation and the authority of civilisation getting weaker and weaker. As the plot continues Ralph still tries to use his authority to establish rules and enforce moral and ethical codes of the society the boys were raised in. He tries to get the boys to work together on keeping a signal fire going and thereby keeping up the hope of being rescued. This signal fire also represents the overall whish of the boys to get home and return to civilised society. As long as the fire burns, at least some degree of association and wish with and for civilisation can be measured amongst the boys. The first signal fire is maintained until the rumours of a â€Å"snake-thing†, or â€Å"beastie† living on the mountain top, where the fire is burning, come up and seem to be proven by some of the boys. This belief in a supernatural being or beast is a clear signal for the loss of power of rational thinking and human logic that are both an element of civilised society. When the boys abandon the post of the signal fire, they also give up some of their hope of being rescued and it seems as if they are already starting to forget, that they want to be rescued and that they cease to want to return to civilisation. Jack on the other hand is not interested in keeping a signal fire going, because he does not want to be rescued. It is ironic that, in the end, he starts off the fire, that leads to their rescue. Another development that can be traced throughout the book is the idea of man hunting, which symbolises the complete descent into savagery. It starts off after the first kill, when the boys re-enact the hunt and use a boy as a pig and beat him up. It gradually escalates first with the second re-enactment of the second killing, where the boys almost kill Roger and escalates in the final kill of a human being: Simon. This happens after Jack as openly declared his break with Ralphs group, and thereby his break with all social and civilised values, and forms his own tribe, that is based on a totalitarian power system with Jack at its top. He and his boys give in to their savage impulses completely when they â€Å"do their dance† and â€Å"mistake† Simon for the beast and tare him apart with their bare hands. After this the catastrophe continues with the murder of Piggy and the man hunt of Ral ph. The killing of Piggy also causes the conch shell to break and thereby shatters the last symbols of civilisation. During the hunt on him, Ralph breaks the â€Å"Lord of the Flies†, so the sows head, which is the symbol of savagery and evil, in order to use the stick the head was staked on, and this symbolizes him giving in to savagery. Last the boys are rescued by a naval officer who, on the one hand stands for authority and civilisation but, on the other hand, is involved in a war, so a civilized man hunt, thereby again showing attributes of the worst implementation of savagery, which gives the book an ironic ending.

Analysis of The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World Colombian writer Gabriel Garcà ­a Mrquez (1927-2014) is one of the most important literary figures of the 20th century. Winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature, he is best known for his novels, particularly One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967). With its juxtaposition of ordinary details and extraordinary events, his short story The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World is an example of the style for which Garcà ­a Mrquez is famous: magic realism. The story was originally written in 1968 and was translated into English in 1972. Plot In the story, the body of a drowned man washes up in a small, remote town by the ocean. As the people of the town attempt to discover his identity and prepare his body for burial, they discover that he is taller, stronger and more handsome than any man they have ever seen. By the end of the story, his presence has influenced them to make their own village and their own lives better than they had previously imagined possible. The Eye of the Beholder From the beginning, the drowned man seems to take on the shape of whatever his viewers want to see. As his body approaches the shore, the children who see him imagine he is an enemy ship. When they realize he has no masts and therefore cant be a ship, they imagine he might be a whale. Even after they realize he is a drowned man, they treat him as a plaything because that’s what they wanted him to be. Though the man does seem to have some distinctive physical characteristics on which everyone agrees namely his size and beauty the villagers also speculate extensively about his personality and history. They reach agreement about details like his name that they couldnt possibly know. Their certainty seems to be both a part of the magic of magic realism and a product of their collective need to feel that they know him and that he belongs to them. From Awe to Compassion At first, the women who tend to the body are in awe of the man they imagine he once was. They tell themselves that if that magnificent man had lived in the village†¦ his wife would have been the happiest woman and that he would have had so much authority that he could have drawn fish out of the sea simply by calling their names. The real men of the village fishermen, all pale in comparison to this unrealistic vision of the stranger. It seems that the women arent entirely happy with their lives, but they do not realistically hope for any improvement they just fantasize about the unattainable happiness that could have been delivered to them only by this now-dead, mythical stranger. But an important transformation takes place when the women consider how the drowned mans heavy body will have to be dragged across the ground because it is so large. Instead of seeing the benefits of his enormous strength, they begin to consider that his large body might have been a terrible liability in life, both physically and socially. They begin to see him as vulnerable and want to protect him, and their awe is replaced by empathy. He begins to seem so defenseless, so much like their men that the first furrows of tears opened in their hearts, and their tenderness for him also equates to tenderness for their own husbands who have begun to seem lacking in comparison to the stranger. Their compassion for him and their desire to protect him put them in a more active role, making them feel capable of changing their own lives rather than believing they need a superhero to save them. Flowers In the story, flowers come to symbolize the lives of the villagers and their own sense of efficacy in improving their lives. We are told at the beginning of the story that the houses in the village had stone courtyards with no flowers and which were spread about on the end of a desertlike cape. This creates a barren and desolate image. When the women are in awe of the drowned man, they passively imagine that he could bring improvement to their lives. They speculate that he would have put so much work into his land that springs would have burst forth from among the rocks so that he would have been able to plant flowers on the cliffs. But there is no suggestion that they themselves or their husbands could put forth this kind of effort and change their village. But thats before their compassion allows them to see their own ability to act. It takes a group effort to clean the body, to sew large enough clothes for it, to carry the body, and to stage an elaborate funeral. They even have to enlist the help of neighboring towns to get flowers. Further, because they do not want him to be orphaned, they choose family members for him, and through him all the inhabitants of the village became kinsmen. So not only have they worked as a group, they have also become more emotionally committed to each other. Through Esteban, the townspeople are united. They are cooperative. And they are inspired. They plan to paint their houses gay colors and dig springs so they can plant flowers. But by the end of the story, the houses have yet to be painted and the flowers have yet to be planted. But whats important is that the villagers have stopped accepting â€Å"the dryness of their courtyards, the narrowness of their dreams.† They are determined to work hard and make improvements, they are convinced that they are capable of doing so, and they are united in their commitment to realize this new vision.

This involved the divestiture of weak-performing business and product categories, which included eight business units. Although the divestiture would decrease Sara Lee’s revenues, it was believed that concentrating their financial and managerial resources on a smaller number of business units would be beneficial. The food retail industry is the most attractive and the international refrigerated bread industry is the least attractive. The food retail industry is the most attractive primarily because it has an extremely high market size. This industry is benefiting from the economic downturn because less people are eating at restaurants. Instead they are making more meals at home. Although this industry is benefiting from the economic downturn, there is a high risk of uncertainty. This is because of the competitiveness of the industry, economic factors, and emerging opportunities that the business unit will have to face. On the other side, the international refrigerated bread industry is the least attractive because of the global economic downturn. The economic recession affected this company particularly hard. Spain is the main country that supported this industry for refrigerated bread and got hit harder than other countries. Spain is also the only country that is looking to continue the want for refrigerated bread, whereas other countries are turning to fresh breads as its leading bread products causing the projected growth rate to decrease significantly.
